The Electronic Heart: What would you do to live longer?

Nearly 6 million Americans have congestive heart failure, or CHF, which is just one of the chronic diseases affecting the 90 million Americans who live with serious illness today. These patients and their families and care teams often confront heart-wrenching decisions about treatment options or the withdrawal of treatment.

The Electronic Heart, a 4-part podcast series, follows 72-year-old Max, who is dying of severe congestive heart failure; his doctors say he’ll be dead within a year. But he and his doctors could choose to implant a high-tech heart pump that circulates blood — without a pulse. Max could feel better and live longer — or it could cause a stroke or other complications that would lead to a life worse than death. And he’d have to be plugged into an electrical outlet for the rest of his life.

Derailed: When Mental Illness Throws a Life Off Track

Few people suffer as much from secrecy as patients and families touched by mental illness. Secrecy hurts. It contributes to the dilemmas that face us, whether we or our loved ones suffer from an intermittent mood disorder or from a severe mental illness that makes a productive life hard or impossible.

Derailed, a 5-part podcast series, helps to break the silence by bringing to life the authentic experience of one man suffering from mental illness, including the excruciating dilemmas – the “hard calls” — that face everyone in his circle — partners, kids, relatives, colleagues and doctors. Shining a light on these dilemmas, and on a broken system, is a first and important step toward change.
